Borkum Riff

An aromatic pipe tobacco brand born in Sweden and produced in Denmark, named after a lighthouse station in the North Sea.

Borkum Riff is a pipe tobacco brand that launched in Sweden in 1962 and is produced in Denmark today. Its name belongs neither to a founder nor to a city. A lighthouse station of the same name once stood off the Heligoland Bight in the North Sea; because the name was repeated frequently in marine weather reports read out on the radio, it had already lodged itself in Swedish listeners' ears.

The brand took over this name, which already carried recognition; the sailing-ship figure on the emblem is based on an engraving by 17th-century cartographer Johann Baptist Homann. The fact that the old lightship of the same name served as the first broadcasting ship of Radio Veronica off the Dutch coast between 1960 and 1964 further reinforced the name's fame outside seafaring circles.

The Blend's Birth and the American Push

Bertil Sandegård developed the first blend. From the very start Sandegård was targeting not the Swedish domestic market but the American pipe tobacco consumer; the result was accordingly a coarse-cut base of Virginia and Burley leaves suited to flavouring. Sales initially fell short of expectations. The turning point was the Bourbon Whiskey blend introduced to the US market in 1969; the interest this product drew opened the way for the brand and made Borkum Riff one of the fixtures on American tobacconist shelves. The US remained the brand's largest market in the years that followed as well.

A series expanding into different flavours followed Bourbon Whiskey. The brand is considered one of the examples of casing and flavouring technique applied at industrial scale: the leaf blend is kept plain, and the character is largely determined by the added flavouring. This approach has made Borkum Riff one of the widely distributed representatives of the aromatic blend family.
