Pipe Brands
Denicotea
An accessory manufacturer founded in Cologne in 1932, known for its silica-gel filter and for the filtered pipes that gave it a foothold in the German market.
Denicotea is a German tobacco-accessory manufacturer founded in Cologne in 1932 by Willy Heineberg, taking its name from the silica-gel-filled filter cartridge it began producing. The company initially focused on cigarette holders and their replaceable filters, and soon moved into pipes as well, releasing models designed around the same filter housing.
The Filter Idea and the Early Years
In its founding years, cigarettes left the factory unfiltered; the cartridge Denicotea patented worked by passing smoke through a porous silica-gel filling. According to the company's own history, the product's first name was "DA-Filterpatrone," and a single gram of the filling was said to offer a surface area of hundreds of square metres. In the 1930s, holders found favour not only as a technical accessory but also as a fashion object considered part of one's dress. Company records state that exports began in 1938.
The move into pipes is recorded in the firm's own history as having been taken in 1935, when briar pipes designed to accept the silica-gel cartridge went into production that year. This direction placed the brand among the manufacturers that helped establish the habit of filtered pipes in Germany. In the following period, the company's pipes largely used activated-carbon filters instead of silica gel; the difference between these two filling types is detailed in the entry on pipe filters and systems.
