Denny Souers: American Freehands Stamped DCS

American maker Denny Souers is known for Danish-influenced freehand pipes carved from Greek-sourced briar; his signature is the DCS letters carved rather than stamped under the shank.

Denny Souers is a name that emerged from the generation of American pipe makers who worked alone. In the community, he is known for the three-letter DCS signature, which is carved rather than stamped under the shank of his pipes. His workshop is known to have been in the state of Ohio; according to accounts, it was in the state capital of Columbus, though the location has not been confirmed by an independent record.

Style and Material

Souers's work belongs largely to the freehand family: the line of the bowl and shank is determined not by a ready-made mold but by the block's own grain. Behind this approach lies the postwar Danish school, which popularized free-form pipes. Still, the maker has not confined himself solely to free form; he has also tried his hand at classic shapes.

His preferred material is plateau briar blocks sourced from Greece. Plateau blocks are cut so that the top surface of the root is left in its barked state, allowing the natural texture of the crown to be preserved in freehand pipes. According to the maker's own account, the decisive criterion in selecting a block is the direction of the grain, and the final form emerges to the extent the grain allows. In his own promotional writing, he has stated he has carved pipes for about forty years.
