Pipe Brands
Gilli (Mauro Gilli)
An Italian workshop founded near Turin, known first for pipe repair and restoration before it went on to produce its own handmade models.
Gilli is a small Italian pipe workshop run by Mauro Gilli near Turin. It first made its name not through manufacturing but through repair: the workshop operated for many years primarily as a repair shop restoring damaged pipes to usable condition, and the pipes bearing its own signature came later, built on that accumulated knowledge.
In Italian trade directories, the business is registered in Beinasco under the heading "articoli fumatori — riparazioni pipe" (smokers' goods — pipe repair); the workshop's own promotional page, however, gives Cantalupa, in the same province, as its location.
A Repair Workshop
The core of Gilli's work is rescuing worn pipes belonging to both collectors and everyday smokers. Among the jobs listed in the workshop's promotional materials are replacing broken or tooth-marked stems, replacing loosened tenons, and repairing meerschaum pipes. Replacement stems are prepared both as ready molded pieces and worked from rod stock, in methacrylate and ebonite; alongside plain black, veined cumberland material is also used. As a less common option, genuine horn and amber are worked; these two materials are sought by those looking for the look of a classic-period pipe. Often the measure in a repair is the original piece itself: a new stem is finished by hand to match the body of the pipe and the fit of the mortise.
That repair has grown into a specialty in its own right at this scale is also a sign of how firmly rooted pipe culture is in Italy. For the country's manufacturing tradition, see the entry on the short history of handmade Italian pipes.
