Grant's Pipe Shop
The history of Grant's Pipe Shop, said to trace back to 1849 California Gold Rush and considered San Francisco's oldest tobacconist, and its 2012 lease dispute.
Grant's Pipe Shop was a shop that stood in San Francisco for over a century and a half, considered the city's oldest operating traditional tobacconist. Its origins, according to the business's own account, reach back to the 1849 Gold Rush years; its first customers are said to have been workers heading to the mining districts and sailors from trading ships docked at the harbor. This founding date has not been confirmed by an independent commercial register.
In its later years, the shop was also known as Grant's Tobacconist.
Founding and Early Period
The Gold Rush turned San Francisco within a few years from a small settlement into a port city, and shops selling tobacco and pipes were an ordinary part of this rapid growth. Grant's, according to records, is one of the few businesses surviving from this first generation. The chain of ownership between 1849 and the 2000s is not known in detail today; the information that survives concerns mostly its later period. Among its 19th-century customers is said to have been Joshua Norton, who declared himself "Emperor of America" and became a fixture of the city's folklore. Throughout the period, the shop's inventory encompassed varieties of pipe tobacco alongside briar and meerschaum pipes.
