Pipe Brands

Johs

A brand carrying the name of Danish pipemaker Mogens Johansen; after years spent producing unsigned work for Bjarne, the workshop began appearing under its own stamp after 2008.

Johs is the brand Danish pipemaker Mogens Johansen uses for his own pipes. Raised in the area around Frederikshavn in North Jutland, the maker spent long years producing under another brand's name and was only recognized under his own stamp in the late 2000s. This delayed visibility stands as a concrete example of how, in Danish pipe craft, workshop labor often remains hidden behind a brand name.

The Path to the Craft

Known records give Mogens Johansen's birth year as 1953 and his birthplace as just outside Frederikshavn; this has not been confirmed by an independent document. His vocational training was in metalwork and plumbing. After school he worked in a scattering of unrelated jobs — welding, shipbuilding, assisting at a photography shop, and stone carving. He began working with pipes at a bench he set up in his basement during periods of unemployment.

The development that changed the course of his craft was meeting Peter Hedegaard in the late 1980s. The guidance the experienced master gave markedly advanced Johansen's craftsmanship, and a long friendship formed between the two. Hedegaard's move from Helsingør to Frederikshavn in the early 2000s is thought to owe something to this closeness. Records also indicate the two of them together contributed to the development of young craftsman Knud Bech, who first appeared publicly at a pipe gathering in 2002.
