Kiko

The best-known name among meerschaum pipes produced in Tanganyika; identified by its briar bowl lined with meerschaum, an elephant emblem, and a 'Made in Tanganyika' stamp.

Kiko is the best-known name among meerschaum pipes produced in East Africa. The brand is identified by a bowl arrangement with a briar exterior lined inside with meerschaum; the first clues for recognizing a piece are also the elephant figure on the stamp and the "Made in Tanganyika" mark of origin. The name means "pipe" directly in Swahili.

Tanganyika is the former name of the country that gained independence in 1961 and, after merging with Zanzibar in 1964, took the name Tanzania; for this reason such a mark roughly dates a pipe to before the mid-1960s.

Amboseli Stone and the Production Network

The brand's raw material was meerschaum drawn from the Amboseli basin north of Kilimanjaro. The basin usually takes its name from the mostly dry, salty Amboseli Lake and spans both sides of today's Kenya-Tanzania border. Records indicate the deposits were worked by the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation, founded in Nairobi in 1955; the company later moved its headquarters to Arusha. Manufacture of the pipes in Tanganyika is said to have been carried out by an entity called Kilimanjaro Pipe Company Ltd.

The stone extracted here was finished by staining in brown, black, and yellow tones. It is regarded in the community as inferior to Eskişehir stone: its texture is said to be denser, and so it does not absorb combustion residue to the same degree. Even so, once Türkiye banned the export of raw stone in the 1970s to keep processing within its own borders, the African source gained added value for workshops whose access to block stone had narrowed. Amboseli stone was worked mostly into meerschaum-lined briars and leather-wrapped bowls.
