RC Sands
The signature of American maker Raymond "Chuck" Sands, who made pipes without a lathe in a converted barn workshop in Ohio. Known for thick-walled, unpretentious briar pipes.
RC Sands is the signature American pipe maker Raymond "Chuck" Sands (d. 28 September 2022) used on his pipes. Living in the Columbus area of Ohio, Sands learned the craft from the region's well-known maker Tim West; by the records he began producing under his own name in 1998. He lived in Reynoldsburg and carried on his work at his farm in Pickerington.
Workshop and Method
The workshop was converted from an old dairy building on the land where he kept his horses, and its equipment was out of the ordinary: a significant share of the benches and fixtures came from the maker's own hands.
The core choice that set Sands's method apart was that he did not use a lathe. Nor did he turn to templates or ready molds; he settled on shape on the spot, reading the grain direction of each briar block. He used a large grinding wheel of his own making for rough shaping, leaving the finer details to smaller, softer wheels. The final stage of smooth surfaces, however, went entirely by hand; it is known that he would hand-sand a single pipe for days, sometimes weeks. Nor did he have a fixed recipe for sandblasting; he judged the result by eye and by hand, according to the character of the block.
