Pipe Brands
Roman Kovalev (Doctor's Pipes)
A Russian maker who turned to pipe making after sixteen years as a pediatric neurologist, and who developed his own sandblasting rig at his workshop in Petersburg.
Roman Kovalev is a Russian handmade pipe maker who signs his pipes under the name "Doctor's Pipes." Born in 1971 on what is now Ukrainian territory, he spent most of his life in the West Siberian city of Nizhnevartovsk after his family moved north, before settling in Petersburg in 2010.
The brand name is not an advertising invention but a direct trace of his professional background: Kovalev graduated from medical school in 1995 and worked for sixteen years as a pediatric neurologist.
From Medicine to the Workshop
Kovalev's introduction to pipes dates to 1995, the year he graduated from medical school and bought his first pipe. In later years his interest shifted to collecting, and from there to the craft of making. A Hiroyuki Tokutomi blowfish he acquired in 1998 is considered a turning point in this trajectory. By his own account, what interests him most is not the finished object but the working method of the person who produced it; he credits his years of correspondence and study with various makers, rather than any formal training, for his skill.
His first workshop was set up in Nizhnevartovsk; production was properly established in Petersburg only after his move there in 2010. The workshop consists of two rooms: a main working room and a separate, soundproofed compartment for noisy machinery.
