Pipe Brands
F. B. Bauer
The stamp of an Austrian-born master, said to have trained in the master-apprentice system in Vienna, who made his pipes alone in Detroit during the first half of the twentieth century.
F. B. Bauer is the trade name of an Austrian-born pipemaker who worked in Detroit during the first half of the twentieth century. His pipes carry the stamps "F. B. BAUER," "HANDMADE," and "DETROIT." Not a factory brand but the personal bench of a single craftsman sustained across his lifetime, the Bauer name is remembered in American pipe history less as a brand than as a record of individual craftsmanship.
Stamp, Name, and Dating
The Bauer stamp gives collectors a single piece of information: whose hands the pipe came from and in which city. It gives no date. Since the master worked at the same bench in Detroit for roughly thirty years and there is no indication the stamp text changed during that span, surviving examples can only be placed roughly within the 1916-1945 range; there is no standard that would allow a narrower window.
A second problem complicating archival research is the name itself. In records the master appears as Blasenbauer, Franz Bauer, Franz B. Bauer, Frank Bauer, and Frank B. Bauer; the Austrian spelling dominates early records, the Anglicized form later ones. The original spelling of the surname is likewise not singular: sources show both Blasonbauer and Blasenbauer. For this reason, searching under a single name in an archival investigation of Bauer would be misleading.
