Pipe Brands
J.B.B. (Joseph B. Brown)
A stamp seen on the pipes of Joseph B. Brown's tobacconist-goods business, run in Kingston upon Hull from the 1870s to the 1920s.
J.B.B. is the stamp Joseph B. Brown used on his pipes and tobacco goods in the port city of Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire. The stamp comes from the founder's initials. The business was founded in the early 1870s and continued to exist until the 1920s.
In the promotional texts of the period, the business is referred to not as a manufacturer but as an "importer of smokers' requisites in Hull." This description points to a mixed way of working common in provincial tobacco trades: some parts were bought in, while assembly and final finishing were done on site.
The Founder and the Business's Course
Joseph Brown was born around 1844 in the town of Ashbourne, Derbyshire. He began his career not in pipes but as a traveling sales representative in jewelry; this early background helps explain the interest in metalwork seen in his products in later years. By 1871 he had settled in the Hull area, and he married there in 1875. His connection to the pipe trade dates to 1876; according to records, he took out a patent that year for "bands and mounts for tobacco pipes." No independent registration record of this patent has been found to date.
The business's fixed address for many years was 41 Brook Street, Hull. The 1892 Hull trade directory lists Joseph Brown at this address as an "importer of tobacco and fancy goods"; the occupation descriptions in the census returns point the same way. It is known that at least two of Brown's sons joined the business, and that it continued to appear in directories until 1922. It has been suggested that management may have passed to the elder son in the business's final period; however, this is an inference drawn from a name change in the directory records and has not been confirmed by documentation.
