Olie Sylvester (Monstrosity Pipes)

American maker Olie Sylvester, who moved from a visual-artist identity to the pipe bench, and the Monstrosity Pipes series born in 2008.

Olie Sylvester is an American pipe maker producing under the name Monstrosity Pipes. Coming to the bench not through the classic apprenticeship route but from a visual-arts education has shaped both his formal language and his standing in the community.

He was born in 1972 in DeLand, Florida, graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1999, and then settled around Atlanta. A childhood habit of collecting pipes was revived in this period; collecting gradually evolved into knowledge of materials and technique, and from there into production. Sylvester is counted among the generation of independent American makers who rose in the second half of the 2000s and foregrounded their identity as designers.

The Founding of the Bench

Monstrosity Pipes was born in 2008. Records indicate that some of the first pieces began as bodies roughed out by American carver Mark Tinsky, then designed and finished by Sylvester. This arrangement did not satisfy the maker for long: he wanted to carry a pipe from the first cut to the final polish entirely in his own hands. To that end he went to Brentwood, Tennessee, and worked there with Todd Johnson, learning every stage of working briar. A friendship struck up with Bruce Weaver, who visited the workshop during the same period, also fed the exchange of knowledge. Sylvester returned from Tennessee not only with hands-on training but with his first lathe; independent production began from there.
