Pipe Brands
Pipes JAS
A handmade pipe brand in which Juan Antonio Salhus produces pipes single-handedly in Curicó, Chile, from the native espino wood.
Pipes JAS is the name of a small pipe bench run single-handedly by Juan Antonio Salhus Rodríguez in the city of Curicó in Chile's central region. Among the few workshop-scale producers in Latin America, the brand stands out for relying entirely on a local wood rather than imported briar.
Because thorough records about it long remained scarce, it is listed in most catalogs under "brands of uncertain identity"; even so, the maker's own publications and interviews in the Spanish-language pipe press lay out with reasonable clarity who founded the brand and how.
The Founder and the Birth of the Bench
Salhus spent his working life in information technology, running a small computer business in Curicó. In a 2012 interview he says he began smoking a pipe more than twenty years earlier, returned to it after a gap, and made his first pipes about two years before that interview; on this basis the bench can be said to have been founded around 2010. The founding year is nonetheless not fixed; dates in the maker's own publications do not line up exactly with this calculation. The start was less a business plan than a response to dissatisfaction with ready-made pipes: Salhus and his physician friend Marcos Benavente tried making pipes for their own use, and interest from those around them turned production into a regular practice. In the same interview he says monthly output at that time ran between thirty and forty pipes, and that he promoted the brand mainly online and at local craft fairs; this figure rests on a single interview and cannot be taken as valid for later years.
