The Briar Workshop: an American Bench Founded in Vermont
A shared bench founded in Vermont in the 1970s by Elliott Nachwalter and Jorg Jemelka, where many American pipe makers learned bench discipline.
The Briar Workshop is a shared bench founded in Vermont in the 1970s that had a hand in shaping the American handmade pipe tradition. The workshop's founder, Elliott Nachwalter, began the work in a cabin near Stowe with a handful of tools, working alongside Andrew Marks; he later formed a partnership with Jorg Jemelka and gave the workshop its name.
The founding's exact year does not appear consistently in the sources; secondary sources cite 1976. Danish designer-maker Finn Meyan Andersen also joined the team shortly after.
The Workshop's Way of Working
The Briar Workshop was conceived not as a one-person bench but as a production setting in which more than one maker worked under the same roof. Among the names who worked here over the years are Brad Pohlmann, Jim Cooke — who would become known as J. T. Cooke — and Carole Burns. In this respect the workshop functioned as a kind of school for the American handmade pipe scene that flourished in the 1970s and 1980s: makers learned bench discipline here, then went on their way under their own names.
One distinctive side of the workshop is described as an attempt to combine handwork with machinery. According to the account, as part of a collaboration set up with Ehrlich's in Boston, pipe production machines dating from the turn of the century were acquired, and these machines were overhauled by Jemelka; however this detail rests on a single chain of sourcing. The aim was for a hand-shaped model to be reproduced without its measurements being lost. It is said that the workshop could thus work both on one-off pieces and on limited runs of certain models. In Nachwalter's own account, choosing well-rested briar blocks is the starting point of the work; vulcanite and acrylic are seen as mouthpiece materials on surviving examples.
