Erickson (Ken Erickson)

The workshop of American pipemaker Ken Erickson, who started in Minnesota in the late 1960s and continued in California, known for his freehand shapes.

Erickson is the name of the one-man workshop run by American pipemaker Ken Erickson (d. January 2003). Erickson started making pipes in the late 1960s and built a solid reputation among American collectors with his freehand pipes, while remaining almost entirely unknown outside the US. His name today is a signature known only by longtime pipe enthusiasts and estate-pipe followers.

From Minnesota to California

Erickson began the trade in Minnesota; shortly after, he moved his workshop to the town of Sunland in California and continued production there for the rest of his life. His way of working resembled that of the small American workshops of the era: bodies handled one at a time rather than by series mold, limited output, and a relationship built directly with a network of dealers.

The growth of his reputation owed much to the mail-order pipe newsletters of the pre-internet era. In the years when well-known dealers announced new arrivals to their customers via duplicated lists, Erickson-signed examples were, according to the account, among the names that disappeared quickly from the list. This mode of circulation, despite the small scale of production, allowed his name to reach collector circles across the country.
