Pipe Brands
Smokers' Haven
A well-established tobacconist and pipe brand founded in Columbus in 1940, bringing English pipes and its own house blends to the American market.
Smokers' Haven is a tobacconist and pipe brand that has operated in Columbus, Ohio since 1940. From its founding it has functioned not as a general tobacco retailer but as a specialty shop devoted solely to pipes and pipe tobacco; over time its name grew beyond the store itself into a brand associated with its own blends.
A Specialty Shop Model
The shop's founder is Joseph Zieve, who opened the business in June 1940 together with his wife Ina Zieve and his brother-in-law Sid Ritter. The trio's choice was to concentrate on a single family of products rather than follow the era's usual mix of grocery-and-tobacconist shops. This approach carried the shop to an unusual scale over the period from the 1940s to the late 1970s: according to reported figures, the stock held more than ten thousand English-made pipes, and the customer files exceeded sixty thousand. Zieve and Ritter's regular trips to Britain were both the source and the shaping force behind this stock; the development of new pipe shapes with GBD, conceived solely with Columbus customers in mind, is the most concrete result of this relationship. The same trips also proved useful on the tobacco side: the blends the shop would sell under its own name were shaped through face-to-face conversations with manufacturers in England.
This way of working was not common in American tobacco retailing of the period. While most retailers chose from ready-made lists offered by importers, Smokers' Haven determined both its stock and its product range directly through the relationship it built with the manufacturer.
