Northern Briar Pipes

A British pipe workshop rooted in Stockport, carried on by the Walker family for three generations; today known for the individually made pipes coming from Ian Walker's hand.

Northern Briar Pipes is a small-scale pipe workshop born around Stockport in Northwest England and kept in the hands of the same family for three generations. The name today is synonymous with Ian Walker; the brand's entire output comes off a single maker's bench, and every pipe is shaped by hand from start to finish. Factory-scale production has never featured at any point; the workshop has remained a family business making its living from craftsmanship.

A Three-Generation Line of Craft

The family's tie to the pipe trade was established when Ian Walker's grandfather, George Walker, began working at Duncan Briars in 1922. Records show George Walker was made the factory's foreman in 1931 after a long apprenticeship, responsible for training pipe makers and finishers. After a total of thirty-six years at the factory, he left Duncan in 1958, and that same year set up, with his son Peter Walker, a workshop offering pipe repair services to tobacconists across the United Kingdom. This repair workshop is the origin of the Northern Briar name.

Ian Walker joined the trade in 1972, straight out of school. The family's purchase of a tobacconist's shop in the Heaton Moor area of Stockport in 1983 was the step that changed the business's direction: by then handling all the repairs, Ian Walker tried making his own pipes for the shop's shelves. When the trial caught on, production spread first to nearby shops, then across the country. His meeting with Bill Taylor, maker behind the Ashton brand, and the support he received from him, is often cited as the turning point at which the workshop found its own voice.
