Pipe Brands
Strano
The name of the Strano brothers, who left their mark on the New York pipe scene in the mid-twentieth century; a family story combining Joe Strano's bench in Queens with Al Strano's role at Wally Frank Ltd.
Strano is not the name of a single factory but of a surname carried by two brothers in the New York pipe scene. It covers both a tobacconist carving pipes at his own bench in Queens and his brother, who served as national brand manager at one of the era's most visible mail-order houses. For that reason the Strano stamp points not to a single production line, but to a family's entry into the trade from two different directions.
Joe Strano and the Northampton Tobacconist
Joe Strano ran a small tobacco shop called the Northampton Tobacconist in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Queens. What set the shop apart was that the work happened not in a back room but in the storefront window: passersby could watch the craftsman at work carving a pipe or reworking a bowl right behind the glass. Joe both made handmade pipes and ran a busy repair business. According to records, he developed his own precision tools for these repairs and sold them to other repair workshops as well; it is reported that pipes were mailed to him from countries around the world. The shop also sold tobaccos blended in-house; the most frequently mentioned of these is said to have been "Tom's #1."
The shop was also a typical example of the era's house-brand pipe arrangement. Most of the pipes sold under the Northampton name were supplied by Weber Pipe Co. of Jersey City. Because Weber shipped bowls from the same molds to many New York tobacconists after the 1950s, pipes in different storefronts looked strikingly alike. This overlap still makes it difficult today to distinguish house-stamped pipes from pieces that came straight from the master's own hand; for a broader picture of the issue, see the entry Handmade or Machine-Made?. The Northampton Tobacconist is recorded as having closed in the late 1970s; this date has not been confirmed by an independent document.
