Mincer (Tracy Mincer)

The bench of American Tracy Mincer, founder of the Custom-Bilt brand; known for thick-walled rustic pipes, the perforated Doodler model, and the brand's later change of hands.

Mincer is the bench known by the name of American pipe maker Tracy Mincer. Mincer's real fame comes from the Custom-Bilt brand he founded in 1934; with their thick walls and deeply carved surfaces, these pipes presented a look diametrically opposed to the slim, polished English style of the period. According to records, the workshop operated in Indianapolis from 1938 to 1946, with Chicago cited for the period before that.

The Custom-Bilt Years

The brand's name changed in 1946, following Mincer's partnership with Eugene J. Rich, Inc., from the hyphenated spelling to a single word, Custombilt. The expansion of the distribution network and the brand's advertising line — "as personal as a thumbprint," long remembered — date to the same years. Among collectors, the hyphenated mark is taken to indicate the Mincer period, while the unhyphenated spelling points to later years; alongside this, the heavy body and coarse rustic texture are also considered marks distinguishing examples from Mincer's own hand.

In the early 1950s Mincer's financial troubles worsened, and he was unable to sustain Custombilt production, eventually losing his rights to the brand name as well. The brand's subsequent path is a separate matter and is covered in the Custom-Bilt article.
