Custom-Bilt is a briar pipe brand founded in the US by Tracy Mincer in the 1930s, known for its large bowls and roughly carved surface. Because the brand was produced under several independent companies over half a century, it has one of the most tangled records in American pipe making. That the name has two separate spellings, "Custom-Bilt" and "Custombilt," is no coincidence either; the difference reflects the changes of ownership as they show up on the stamp.

The Tracy Mincer Era

Records indicate Mincer began making pipes in the early 1930s while working the cigar counter of a Chicago pharmacy. Sources do not agree on the brand's birth year: the most-repeated date is 1934, though the book by William E. Unger Jr., the field's principal researcher, pushes the story back to 1929. Against this uncertainty, stamps offer firmer ground; the 1938-1946 span, when production concentrated in Indianapolis, can be traced this way, with Chicago cited for the period before. Mincer's patent dated September 7, 1937 also belongs to this early period: a mechanism in which an aluminum inner piece was typically held in place by two red plastic rods is an example of the era's common quest for pipe filters. The wartime collection of aluminum made this solution short-lived.
