Domenico Grenci

The workshop and briar philosophy of Italian maker Domenico Grenci, known for his hand-shaped smooth-surface pipes made in the village of Brognaturo in Calabria.

Domenico Grenci (d. 1998) was a pipe maker who worked in the village of Brognaturo, at the foot of the Serre mountains, in the province of Vibo Valentia in Calabria. His workshop, established in a small mountain village, became a landmark in the region's handmade-pipe tradition thanks to his pipes reaching buyers abroad.

Though his name is not mentioned as often today as that of the Calabrian makers who followed him, he built a loyal following, particularly among collectors in the United States.

From Sculpture to Pipes

Grenci's first pursuit was not pipes but sculpture: in his youth he made a living in Chicago as a carver working in ebony. Since sources do not agree on the year he went to America, the exact bounds of this period are unclear; his renown among American customers, however, is largely traced to those years. Coming to know wood first through a sculptor's eye later became the foundation of his pipe craftsmanship as well.

After returning to his village, he set up his own workshop; the founding year is given in sources as the 1960s, without consensus on an exact date. Most of those who placed orders traveled all the way to Brognaturo to receive their pipes directly from the maker's hands. Among those who came are counted Italian President Sandro Pertini (1896-1990), known for his fondness for pipes, and Luciano Lama (1921-1996), general secretary of the CGIL trade union. Local records state that Grenci was awarded the title of Knight of the Republic (Cavaliere della Repubblica) in 1987.
