Pipe Brands
Kabik (CHP-X, Sven-Lar, Wenhall)
American master Michael V. Kabik produced Danish-influenced freehand pipes under the names CHP-X, Sven-Lar, and Wenhall between 1971 and 1990; the workshops he worked at are counted among the first to bring freehand production to a series scale in the USA.
Kabik is the collective name for the pipes American pipemaker Michael V. Kabik produced across a succession of workshops over nearly twenty years. Kabik's work is known not under a single brand but under the names of the studios he worked at: CHP-X, Sven-Lar, and Wenhall.
What the three share is that all were shaped using the freehand method carried over from Danish workshops, in which the briar block is not chucked to a lathe but held by hand against a spinning sanding disc, so that every piece remains unique. Records indicate the maker was born in 1950 in Annapolis, Maryland, and stopped production around 1989-90. Most of the details about the workshops rest on the maker's own autobiographical account; independent records are scarce.
The CHP-X Years
In the 1960s Kabik worked at a plastics factory in Baltimore and sculpted in the evenings; he had also worked at the tobacco shop of his relative Jay Rostov. Rostov, together with his partner Chuck Holiday, had founded CHP-X Pipes, one of the first workshops in the USA to take freehand production seriously. Holiday had long since left the studio, and the cutter who replaced him was about to leave as well; the vacant design-and-cutting role was offered to Kabik in 1971.
Turning out an average of one hundred fifty pipes a week with a four-person production team, the workshop drew industry attention for its scale; a visit by a manager from the Savinelli family is one sign of that interest. But distribution and sales problems could not be overcome; CHP-X closed around 1973, two years after Kabik's arrival.
