Pipe Brands
Michel
A private-label pipe line sold under its own name by a North Carolina tobacconist called Maison Michel, made to order at various factories in England, France, and Denmark.
Michel is the name not of a pipe workshop but of a tobacco shop. Maison Michel, run by Michel J. Mitchell in North Carolina, followed a practice common at the time: rather than carving its own pipes, it had ready-made factory production stamped with its own name. For this reason, the Michel mark does not correspond to a single workshop, a single country, or a single approach to craftsmanship.
The Private-Label System
In the mid-twentieth century, large tobacconists commissioned well-known factories to produce batches under their own names in order to expand their product range. Michel-marked pipes are a product of this same system. Surviving examples do not agree with one another in their marks: some show "Made in England," others France, and still others Denmark as their origin. This inconsistency points to the shop having worked with more than one supplier over the years. According to records, most of the pipes date to the 1960s and 1970s. When the shop itself opened, however, remains unknown.
Two separate marks are known: MICHEL and MICHEL DELUXE. On part of the Deluxe line, the Charatan logo appears together with the origin stamp "made in London England"; these examples are accepted as having been prepared for the shop at the English factory. Which workshops the remaining marks belong to has largely not been clarified. As a result, both examples of high briar craftsmanship and ordinary mass-produced pieces can be found under the same name; the difference between two pipes can sometimes be seen even within a single display case.
